Let's fix the problem

You do weight lifting for your calf muscle but what about the front of the leg? It's like doing tri's and not hitting bi's and that's what is causing the pain in the front of the leg.

Do some resistance work by lifting weight with the toes and draw them towards the knee (as opposed to calf work where the toes go away form the knee) I did mine by sticking my toes under my desk at work and lifting it a gazillion times.
Once you fix it you will never have shin spints again I promise!

1.) Make sure you have decent shoes to run in. As previously suggested go to a running store.
2.) Stretch your calves well before and after your run.
3.) You don't want to go "balls to the wall" on your first few runs. You have to build yourself up to a certain distance.
4.) I had shin splints as well when I started back...I bought some McDavid compression sleeves for my legs...they were a life saver.

Two other possibilities - you may have increased the distances that you're running too quickly (shouldn't be more than a 10% increase per week) or you may need new shoes.
If you can, take your old shoes to a running store and tell them your problem. They should be able to recommend some shoes that will alleviate the issue. If that's not an option, try to get shoes that have grey rubber on the inner sides of the sole...i was told that the grey rubber is firmer and therefore more supportive.
But also stretch a lot as recommended above - try a google search for shin splint stretch for some good ones.

Ice your shins 20 minutes 2-3 times. Drink a lot of fluids, water and 100% juice. Eat bananas.

Before you exercise and run, always warm up properly and stretch. After your workout, have a nice cool down and stretch out again to prevent injuries like shin splints.
